In my mind, there are two types of pregnant women. The first type LOVES being pregnant. They literally glow and wish they could be pregnant forever. The second type finds themselves hunched over a toilet the majority of the day, can’t handle the smell of scented trash bags (okay, maybe that was just me), and is counting down the days for pregnancy to be over. Okay so these may be the two drastic ends of the spectrum, but it makes me laugh how different everyone can be! I love hearing what other people’s pregnancy experiences were like, so I thought I would share mine.

On social media, we see all of the ADORABLE newborn family pictures. We feel all the baby fever feels meanwhile thinking to ourselves “this couple’s marriage must be on fire”! I mean, how could it not be when they get to snuggle a perfect little bundle that’s half him and half her?! My husband Taylor and I had a different experience which feels extremely personal to share. As I’m typing this, I’m sitting here wondering “What if my readers think that we have a bad marriage? What if they judge me and can’t relate to this at all?” Well, I’m willing to put this out there in hopes that maybe there’s one person who can relate and know they are not alone!
As a stay at home mom, I’m constantly looking for fun activities I can do with my son to keep him entertained. We like ones that are cheap and require few materials! Here are two fun ones we recently did that I wanted to share with you all. Warning: baths may be required following participation in these activities!
Do you ever finding yourself scrolling through social media and it seems like every photo is of the perfect child?
- The baby wearing a head to toe complete name brand outfit (meanwhile, your child is wearing hand me downs covered it stains)
- The toddler quietly reading a book (meanwhile, your child is destroying the house)
- The child sitting in the highchair voluntarily eating peas (meanwhile, your child is eating cookie #2 for the day)
Or perhaps it’s the captions that stick out to you:
- My child just turned one and can say ten words
- My little one started walking at eight months
- My baby is the happiest baby I’ve ever met
Here you sit reading all of this and the negative thoughts begin to consume your mind. Why doesn’t my child do that? Am I doing something wrong? Is my little one behind? It’s EXHAUSTING. It’s unproductive. It’s disheartening. So how do we as moms fight against this?
Remember the days when plane rides were relaxing? After take-off you reclined your seat and either drifted off to dreamland, opened a good book, or started your favorite movie all while figuring out if you wanted peanuts, pretzels, or cookies. Those sure were the days! Don’t get me wrong, vacationing with a toddler and seeing their excitement for new experiences is AMAZING and I love it. But, the whole getting to the vacation destination certainly can be stressful and a lot of work. Last weekend we flew with my 16 month old son (who I might add is cutting four teeth) and we were prepared with some tips and tricks that I’d like to share with you!
There is literally nothing better in the world than when a friend/family member has a new baby. The moment you receive news of that precious bundle’s arrival, you CAN’T WAIT to get your hands on him/her. All you can think about is that sweet newborn smell and baby toes (seriously… there is nothing cuter). It can be so easy to overwhelm that person with calls, texts, and THE question that every newborn mama gets ten times a day: “when can I meet the little one?!” There is absolutely nothing wrong with being excited, but I believe I speak on behalf of all moms with a newborn when I say that it can be overwhelming. After having Jonas, I realized there were several things people did that were super helpful and deeply appreciated. The following is a list you can use the next time someone in your life has a new baby!
You know how everyone always gives advice before you have a kid? Prior to having Jonas, we heard all the horror stories about kids getting sick. We were told “your child will get sick ALL time”, “you won’t sleep a wink when they’re sick”, and “the whole house gets sick when one does.” So we mentally prepared for it. Fast forward to Jonas’s first birthday. He had two extremely minor colds during his whole first year of life. It was a miracle according to everyone!
It’s late Monday afternoon. You’ve had a long day at work or at home taking care of the kids and are counting down the hours until bedtime. But wait… what about dinner? Ugh! Now you have to figure out what you’re going to make, somehow navigate traffic to get to the grocery store, AND actually cook the meal with a child clinging to your leg. Not exactly the most appealing, right?
Yes, you read that title correctly. Moms, you are allowed to rest and recharge the same as anyone else! Easier said than done, right? Totally. But, it’s SO incredibly important to do for a variety of reasons. Now before we dig in, I want to acknowledge that having ‘me time’ may not be an option for everyone. Maybe you are a single mama and doing it all on your own. Or perhaps you live far away from family and getting someone to watch the kids isn’t easy. These situations are tough and make resting so incredibly difficult BUT, I still think it’s important to try even if it may not be nearly as often as you need.
The Great Debate: Stay at Home Moms vs. Working Moms
Working moms, have you ever told someone you’re a working mom and gotten the “oh… so you don’t spend a lot of time with your kids” response? Or how about the stay at home moms. Have you ever gotten the “oh… so you don’t have a career” response? Even if you haven’t actually received these responses, I think it’s safe to say we’ve ALL experienced the judgmental looks. But what about our part-time working mamas. In theory, they have the best of both worlds, right? Yet somehow they still get the same look. So, let’s break down the data and we can once and for all squash the great debate!
